गोपुरम

मदुरई में एक गोपुरम

गोपुरम या गोपुर (जिसे विमानम भी कहते हैं) एक स्मारकीय अट्टालिका होती है, प्रायः शिल्प से सज्जित, एवं अधिकतर दक्षिण भारत के मन्दिरों के द्वार पर स्थित होता है। यह हिन्दु मन्दिरों के स्थापत्य का प्रमुख अंग है। ्यह ऊपर किरीट कलश से शोभायमान होता है। यह मन्दिरों की चारदीवारी में बने द्वार का काम देते हैं।

गोपुरमों का इतिहार आरम्भिक पल्लव वंश के निर्माणों एवं बारहवीं शताब्दी के ाण्ड्य राजवंशओं द्वारा बनवाए गए प्रधान अंगों में जाता है। इनसे मन्दिर के अंदरूनी भाग ढंक जाते हैं, क्योंकि ये प्रायः मुख्य मन्दिर से काफ़ी बडे़ होते हैं। It also dominated the inner sanctum in amount of ornamentation. गोपुरम अधिकतर आयताकार होते हैं, जिनके भूमि तल पर विराट काष्ठ द्वार होते हैं, जो अंदर का मार्ग प्रशस्त करते हैं, एवं खूब अलंकृत होते हैं। ऊपर का गोपुरम कई तलों में बंटा होता है, एवं ऊपर जाते जाते तंग होता जाता है। इसके सबसे ऊपर प्रायः ढोलक आकार का शिखर होता है, एवं उसके ऊपर विषम संख्या में कलश शोभा पाते हैं।

गोपुरमों को शिल्प एवं चित्र्कारी से अत्यधिक सजाया जाता है। यह सम हिन्दु पौराणिक चरित्र ही होते हैं। मुख्यतः वे, जो कि मन्दिर के प्रधान देवता से सम्बन्धित होते हैं।
