9 मार्च 2020 को, वरिष्ठ कांग्रेसी नेता ज्योतिरादित्य सिंधिया द्वारा बनाई गई राजनीतिक उथल-पुथल की स्थिति के कारण, मुख्यमंत्री कमलनाथ के आवास पर एक आपातकालीन कैबिनेट की बैठक हुई, जिसमें 16 मंत्रियों ने मंत्रिमंडल का पुनर्गठन करने के लिए अपने इस्तीफे को टेंडर दिया।

सभी मंत्रियों ने मुख्यमंत्री कमलनाथ पर विश्वास जताया और उन्हें मंत्रिमंडल का पुनर्गठन करने के लिए स्वतंत्र हाथ दिया।

इस्तीफा देने वाले सभी मंत्रियों को मुख्यमंत्री कमलनाथ और पूर्व मुख्यमंत्री दिग्विजय सिंह का करीबी माना जाता है।

14 मार्च 2020 को, मध्य प्रदेश के राज्यपाल, लालजी टंडन ने ज्योतिरादित्य सिंधिया का समर्थन करने वाले 6 मंत्रियों को हटा दिया। इन 6 मंत्रियों को हटाने के लिए मुख्यमंत्री कमलनाथ ने राज्यपाल से सिफारिश की थी।

20 मार्च 2020 को, मुख्यमंत्री कमलनाथ ने मध्य प्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री पद से इस्तीफा दे दिया, क्योंकि वे विद्रोही कांग्रेस विधायकों को समझाने में विफल रहे, जो बेंगलुरु में एक रिसॉर्ट में प्रचार कर रहे थे।
